Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System in 2025.
The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.
Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the ability to question specific calls from the official, mirroring the system currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move follows just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other decisions, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential interference end of a point.
Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.
A Recent Example
An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
