European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
